17 Sep 17 - Visitors from Siberia
The Marlow Museum at Court Garden was honoured on Monday to receive a visit from 2 charming ladies from Vilyuisk in Siberia.
One was the Assistant Mayor of the town which has a population about the same as that of Marlow but, as expected, reaches very much colder temperatures in winter.
The other lady was an English Teacher and fluent in the language.
They were accompanied by Kate Marsden from Marlow who was showing them the town.
Why Marlow? Kate’s namesake but not known to be related, also Kate Marsden, was a Nurse born in North London and is buried in Uxbridge, but lived in Glade Road Marlow nearly 100 years ago. Nurse Kate travelled the world and went to Russia to find a special plant which eased the suffering of leprosy patients. She stayed there and founded a hospital for those patients, since when she has been remembered in the community by a museum named after her. Perhaps the Marlow Museum will consider telling her story for all to see.
The threesome were then greeted by Marlow Mayor Cllr Jocelyn Towns and Town Clerk Hilary Martin before visiting the town further.
